Frequently Asked Questions

Is mice and rat elimination possible?

Yes, once repairs to the physical structure and sanitary conditions are adequately satisfied, and the appropriate amount of chemicals, special lures, and mechanical devices are in place; rat and mice elimination can be achieved.

What are the advantages/disadvantages when using spray and gel insecticides?

The advantages of using liquid insecticides are that it can be applied in most locations where cockroaches are located and are available in varying formulations. However, once applied it can dissipate within 28 days to one (1)  month. The advantage of suing gel insecticides is the they can last up three (3) months. However, they can be unsightly, difficult to apply and must be physically removed and the area cleaned between each application.

Aren't mice just baby rats? What is the difference between the two?

No, though baby rats and adult mice may appear similar, they are actually different species. The Norway rat, of the genus rattus norvegivus, are common to this region. baby rats have small eyes and ears compared to their head and body size. Their tails are shorter than the length of their bodies. From the body their tails start out thicker and become thinner. The house mouse, of the genus mus musculus, have large ears and eyes in comparison to their head and bodies. Their tails are the same length as their bodies.

Can rats and mice exist within the same location?

Yes, normally when rats encounter mice they eat them. In the kitchen area, mice are protected from rats by living in the stoves while rats live in walls.

Is there a difference between eliminating rats and mice?

Yes, mice are nibblers (take a small amount of food) and can travel over 60 feet from their nesting locations to their food source. They are usually found in apartments. Mice can be killed in a single treatment or it may take multiple feeding attempts.

Rats are generally found in basement walls and usually travel 200 feet or further for food. Rats are stationary feeders that will sit in one location to consume their food and will consume their water needs from the food. Rats need several feedings to bring about their death.

Why do I see more roaches after the exterminator services my home?

When cockroaches detect insecticide through their antennae, they leave their hiding places and scatter trying to avoid  the chemicals used.

The conditions that contribute to cockroach and rodent infestations include holes in physical structure, unsanitary environments (clutter and garbage), and water leaks. These conditions are the perfect opportunity for pest to obtain the food, water, and shelter necessary for their survival.

I keep a clean house so why do I still see cockroaches?

The physical environment may have areas that allow cockroaches to find and breed without being seen. In search for food, water, and shelter they can travel into your location from:

  • under the apartment door
  • adjoining apartments
  • grocery stores
  • public transportation
  • guests

I live on the 6th floor, is my apartment safe from rats?

No, rats are constantly looking for food. They will travel 150 feet or further to find it, and have known to scale the exterior walls of buildings to reach it. If there are rats surrounding the building there is a good chance they will make their way into your apartment, even by climbing up the fire escape.

There are rat bait stations surrounding my building. Is it safe for me to assume that the protection given be those bait stations is enough to protect me and my property?

No. Many rat bait stations are placed in their proper locations, but left unattended and professionally re-baited. The bait stations come with labels to indicate the date of service, chemicals placed within the bait stations, but if you check, you will find that they are placed in their original locations and forgotten.

There seems to be many rat sighting throughout New York City, is it impossible to rid the city of rats?

No, the goal of New York City bureaucracy is control , not elimination. For years, the policies for handling pest issues are based on the pacification of pest infestations and not the serious tactics necessary for its eradication. The pest industry standard for dealing with pests is called Integrated Pest Management (IPM) where the goal is Pacification, not Elimination.
